Ignite FAQs (Teens & Parents)
What makes Ignite different from other teen programs?
Ignite combines emotional intelligence, DBT skills, and mindset tools into relatable, real-world resources that are easy to use and speak directly to the teenage experience.
Is Ignite meant to be used by the teen alone or with a parent/coach?
It can be used both ways. Some activities are self-guided, while others include reflection prompts or discussion cards for parents, mentors, or counsellors to use alongside teens.
What is the Ignite programme?
Ignite is a mindset and emotional growth programme for teens aged 13–18 years, focused on identity, emotional awareness, self-leadership, and resilience.
What topics does Ignite cover?
Boundaries, emotional regulation, self-worth, confidence, peer pressure, assertiveness, and communication — all backed by evidence-based practices.
Can I book coaching or workshops through Ignite?
Yes! We offer 1:1 teen coaching, parent support sessions, and group workshops. [Book a Discovery Call] to learn more.
Is Ignite a course or a live programme?
Both! Teens can join online or in-person workshops, access downloadable toolkits, and take part in optional group coaching sessions.
Can a parent sign up their teen, or do teens register themselves?
Parents can register their teen for any programme. Teens can also self-enrol with parental consent.
Is Ignite suitable for teens who are introverted or struggling emotionally?
Yes. Ignite was designed to be inclusive, non-judgmental, and emotionally safe, using guided reflection, storytelling, and peer connection to support growth.
What if a teen doesn’t want to talk?
That’s okay. Many teens engage through journaling, visual tools, or group listening before speaking. Participation is always encouraged—but never forced.
Emotional Dysregulation & Big Feelings
How can I help a child who frequently has emotional outbursts?
A: Emotional outbursts often happen when children feel overwhelmed and don’t yet have the words or tools to express big feelings. Start by staying calm yourself, validating their emotions (“I see you’re really upset”), and offering a safe space to cool down. Tools like the Feel-O-Meter, breathing exercises, or creating a Calm Corner can make a big difference over time.
What are age-appropriate ways to teach emotional regulation?
For younger children, playful tools like feelings charts, mindful breathing games, or guided stories work well. As children grow, introduce reflection activities, self-regulation strategies, and discussion prompts. Our Mind Ninjas and Elevate resources offer ready-to-use tools for different age groups.
How do I create a Calm Corner or regulate classroom space?
A Calm Corner is a simple, dedicated space where children can take a break to manage big feelings. It could include soft cushions, visual reminders (like breathing posters), calming sensory items, and reflection prompts. Our Calm Corner Setup Guide walks you through this step by step.
What are co-regulation strategies I can use as a teacher?
Co-regulation means helping children manage their emotions by staying calm and present yourself. This might look like: Using a calm tone of voice
Modelling deep breaths
Sitting nearby without forcing conversation
Gently guiding them through regulation tools
Over time, this builds trust and teaches self-regulation.
Mindset & Motivation
How can I encourage a growth mindset in children?
Praise effort, not just outcomes. Use language like “You worked hard on that” or “It’s okay to make mistakes — that’s how we learn.” Our Growth Mindset Activity Cards and Resilience Lessons offer simple ways to build this mindset daily.
What’s the difference between a fixed and growth mindset?
A fixed mindset is when children believe abilities are set in stone (“I’m just not good at this”). A growth mindset is when they believe they can improve with effort and practice. Teaching this difference helps children approach challenges with confidence.
How do I help students who say, “I can’t do it” or avoid challenges?
Start by validating their feelings, then gently reframe the challenge. Use phrases like, “You can’t do it yet” or “Let’s try together.” Break tasks into smaller steps and celebrate progress. Our Growth Mindset resources offer practical prompts to support this.
Are there tools or games to help build resilience?
Absolutely! Our Resilience & Growth Lesson Bundles, Bounce Back activities, and Mind Ninjas games are designed to help children see mistakes and setbacks as part of learning — building confidence to keep trying.
Communication & Social Skills
How do I teach students to express their needs and feelings respectfully?
Role-play, sentence starters (“I feel… I need…”), and visual tools can help. Our Communication & Conflict Toolkit provides ready-to-use resources to guide these skills in real life.
What tools help children build empathy and active listening?
Activities like empathy role-play, active listening games, and kindness challenges foster understanding. Mind Ninjas characters and Elevate lessons also introduce empathy in relatable, age-appropriate ways.
How can I help students who struggle to make friends?
Start small. Practise social skills like introducing themselves, asking questions, and showing interest in others. Our Friendship & Communication Lessons provide fun, confidence-building activities for this.
What if a child dominates group activities or excludes others?
Use gentle reminders about teamwork, set clear expectations, and guide group reflection. Our Kindness & Inclusion Lessons and Group Games can help create a more inclusive classroom culture.
Challenging Behaviour & Peer Pressure
How do I respond to defiance or resistance without escalating it?
Stay calm, acknowledge the child’s feelings, and offer choices when possible. Reacting with patience rather than punishment builds trust. Our Mind Ninjas tools and Elevate activities help model positive boundaries and behaviour.
What causes children to act out or shut down?
Often, big emotions like frustration, anxiety, or low self-esteem show up as challenging behaviour. Helping children build emotional awareness and regulation skills reduces these reactions over time.
How can I support children facing peer pressure or social exclusion?
Equip them with tools to set boundaries, seek supportive friendships, and develop self-worth. Our Ignite programme for teens and Mind Ninjas resources for younger children both cover these essential life skills.
Using Elevate & Mind Ninjas Effectively
How do I use Mind Ninjas to teach SEL concepts?
A: The Mind Ninjas characters and activities make SEL fun and relatable. Start with character stories or Feel-O-Meter check-ins, then build on skills with our ready-to-use activities and games.
Which character should I use for specific emotional challenges?
Each character represents a different SEL focus: Zia — Calm & Emotional Regulation
Blaze — Creative Thinking & Social Skills
Simba — Growth Mindset & Resilience
Aki — Confidence & Self-expression
Aura — Empathy & Inclusion
Sai — Self-belief & Confidence
